Atrium Förlag is a young independent publishing house founded in 2006. We are based in Umeå - the European Capital of Culture 2014 - in the north of Sweden, and our publishing house is one of few in Scandinavia with a combined interest in literature for children and young people, as well as the field of film and theatre. We publish high quality books, so far approximately 40 titles, including translations from various languages. Our aim is to issue about six titles a year and to have a comprehensive backlist.
The focus on film and theatre - subjects often neglected on the Swedish book market - has resulted in published screenplays by filmmakers Andrei Tarkovsky and Lukas Moodysson as well as the winning short scripts from the Doris Film script competition, a dissertation on the films of Ingmar Bergman and plays by William Shakespeare, Alexander Pushkin, Tennessee Williams, Jean Cocteau, Hjalmar Söderberg, Catharine Trotter, Erland Josephson, Hjalmar Bergman, Victoria Benedictsson and Alfhild Agrell, most of them including thorough prefaces by renounced film, theatre and literature scholars.
In our list of previous publications of children's and youth literature, one may find E.B. White's classic The Trumpet of the Swan, Sonya Hartnett's award-winning masterpiece Thursday's Child, several collections of Swedish literary fairytales as well as the semi-autobiographical children's book trilogy by Frida Åslund, one of Astrid Lindgren's predecessors. From 2011 we are proud to be the Swedish publisher of the acclaimed british author Jenny Valentine. Our intention is to continue to focus on both classic and contemporary authors. We have a close collaboration with libraries, and put a great emphasis on increasing the knowledge and understanding of children's literature, especially among those working with children and young people.
